The Law Building Scholarship

The Law Building Scholarship was created to encourage young men and women to consider and debate topics of public interest. We recognize that our high school students are the future leaders of our Defiance Community. For that reason, we feel it is important that they become involved in the community through discussion of issues that affect us all.

Because freedom of speech is one of the hallmarks of American society, we want to foster this tradition, by encouraging high school students to voice their opinions on important issues. There is a saying, “I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.”

The Law Building Scholarship is also a way for local high school students to partially fund their higher education. This year’s recipient, Lesley Vogelsong, wrote an essay on the continuing need for unions in the workplace. For her award winning essay, Lesley received $500 toward her college tuition this Fall.

Requests for essays are sent out in the fall of each year to the Defiance High School guidance counselor. Students should check with the guidance counselor as to the topic area and deadline for essay submissions.
